I have been looking forward to the weekend because I have a Kindle Scribe (LOVE!), the weather is cool, and all I want to do is read, read, read, mark up my novel in progress, read some more, and then read. I already have a to-be-read pile that requires significant management. But I could not resist this Amazon deal: Over 800 Kindle books are on sale.
I was able to load my Scribe with enough reading to keep me turning pages all weekend and for many weekends in the future for the price of lunch.
When it comes to reading, I am very much a believer in “to each their own.”
I will read everything from mysteries to thrillers to romance to historical fiction to non-fiction — in a wide range of subjects — to Literature.
But you know what you like better than I do. So wade in and find something you like because Kindle books are on sale!
If you want a couple of recommendations, though:
The First Eagle
If you have watched the TV series Dark Winds, it might be time to read the books that the series is based on. The First Eagle is book 13 in that series.
Tony Hillerman is a bit of a classic — I read these more than a decade ago — but they are steeped in the Navajo Tribal Police and landscape that is so richly portrayed in the TV series. There are a lot of these books (28 to be precise), so get ready to turn some pages and to buy them when Kindle books are on sale.
Belfast Noir
I am a fan of the genre that the Irish are calling Belfast Noir. Some of the best mystery writers working hail from this tradition. This compilation will introduce you to the lot of them — or nearly anyway.
If you like a bit of lived history with your mystery, this is just the thing, so it is. And you will come away with lots of ideas about who to read next.
Transcription
Drop Transcription on your Kindle because this woman can write, and her books tend to be priced to reflect her position in the world as a “National Bestseller.” That label often reflects the lack of imagination of the masses, but in this case, people are reading a class act. I haven’t read this book, which is great because I want to. But I can attest to the moody, literate skill of many of her other mysteries. Also, it’s a spy novel set in the 40s, so you know what I’ll be doing this weekend!
White Out
I am a fan of Nordic Noir and have been working my way through this series from Icelandic writer Ragnar Jónasson for months. I am so glad to see book four — White Out — here for so little money. Buy it now! Read it when you get through the first three!
It’s packaged as a thriller, but, as is often true in this genre, it’s the moody, atmospheric, and character-driven brand of thriller that comes from the frozen north.
This form of noir is not everyone’s bag. But if you liked Rebecka Martinsson, Wallander, or The Killing, you will like this style of thriller.
