I once considered over-ear headphones dorky. I couldn’t understand people who wore them around the city as if they had just fled jobs as air-traffic controllers and forgotten to take them off. Then, despite my fashion-slave prejudices and because my son always looks so happy in his Beats by Dr. Dre, I tried a good pair. It was like dimming the sound on all the irritants of life: kids, husband, dogs, parakeet, someone outside using a leaf blower, loud people on planes, that else’s crying baby on the train. And it brought me inside whatever book or movie or music I was trying to focus on.
At the moment, I’m wearing the JABRA REVO Wireless headphones ($221 at Amazon). Maybe I look like a dork but I no longer care. These are comfy, sound great, fold up to toss in my purse, and switch easily between wires and Bluetooth so I can walk around untethered when I clean my house but use them on the plane when I have to turn on airplane mode. The cute cloth covered cords in Day-Glo orange so I can find them easily in my purse are a nice touch.
