I think I’ve mentioned that I don’t have a home phone. I have a cell phone and a Skype line. I’m also currently trying out an Ooma home phone (which I really like so far but I’ll explain that some other time.) Yesterday Skype was down. This never happens so I assumed at first it was my own setup. And then I decided it was a good excuse not to use the phone and forgot about it. But it really was Skype that was down. All over the world. Almost every Skype user went offline in the last 24 hours. So if you were unable to reach people yesterday, that may well be the reason. Lots of people use the service as a phone line.

Here is the CEO of Skype explaining what happened, the current state of the service,  and how the company is pondering compensated its paying users (like me) for the outage.

If you’d rather read about it, go to the Skype blog.
