I’m Tempted By a Mini-Me Laptop

You all know how fond I am of my new laptop, right? So what will you think of me when I confess that I am experiencing a major crush on its Mini Me? Is that wrong?

I just got in a review unit of the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook PC and it is creating a rift in my happy world. I want it. I love my laptop but this baby I could fit in my everyday purse. This I would always have with me. I would be blogging (twittering, writing, emailing, playing Mahjong, surfing the Web) from the train, on a plane, from a box, with a fox, in the rain.

For years, I have been wishing someone would come out with a computer that just did the basics, didn’t cost a fortune, and was small enough to have on hand at all times. I had given up that anyone would see the wisdom in this simple request but here it is: The IdeaPad weighs 2 ¾ pounds, has a 10.2-inch screen, measures 10″ x 7.25″ x 1″, runs Windows XP, has built-in Wi-Fi, and boasts a slot to add a wireless card. It comes in two configurations: One with 512 MB of memory and an 80 GB hard drive the other with 1 GB of memory and a 160 GB hard drive. The price starts at $399 from Lenovo.com and they promise to ship starting in early October so that’s….now!

Fortunately, Lenovo sent me a white one to review. If they had sent the red one pictured I would be in serious trouble. White I can send back. Red would match both my full-sized laptop and my new Sidekick phone (with designed-by-me cover in—you guessed it—red; yes I managed to get one.) Right now the IdeaPad is available (in addition to red and white) in black. But baby pink and blue will be available in the November or December.
